Machine Guns

The model of machine gun that was used in WW1 was invited in 1884 by Hiram Maxim. The 1914 machine gun, usually positioned on a flat tripod, would require a gun crew of four to six operators.  In theory they could fire 400-600 small-calibre rounds per minute, a figure that was to more than double by the war's end, with rounds fed via a fabric belt or a metal strip.

Howitzers

At the beginning of the First World War the main support weapon for the British Army was a long-barrelled field gun. However, it soon became clear there was a great demand for howitzers to be used under cover or against.  These fired heavy shells on a high trajectory through a short barrel and were the best type of artillery gun to employ against trenches.

Trench mortars

The mortar was first introduced in 1915 by Sir Wilfred Stokes KBE that was issued to the British and U.S. armies. The 3 inch weapon was used to fire into trenches. This was useful to end trench warfare, but you could hear the launch.

Poison Gas

Germans first used poison gas in April 22, 1915 to distract soldiers! Poison gas was effective and not effective, if you set one off and the wind blew your direction you would basically attack yourself.
